The Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol  is blessed with some of Spain´s best beaches, and many of them can be found in Malaga.
For a fun-filled family day out, there is no better way to spend your holiday than lazing on a sandy beach, enjoying the sunshine and swimming in the Med, or taking advantage of the many water sports on offer.

With no shortage of beach bars and restaurants, Malaga has been attracting tourists since the 1960s, when Spanish holidays first became popular with the Brits, and holidaymakers from all over Europe still flock to the city every year.

Divided into three sections, the beach areas are aptly named after local fish, and include the Anchovy, the Sardine and the Squid. The most popular beaches in the Eastern part of the city are Peñón del Cuervo, La Cueva, Torre de las Palmas, La Araña and El Hornillo, which boast many hidden coves and cliffs, and attract swimmers and scuba divers.

The Sardine route begins at Malaga port and stretches all the way along the coastline to the main marina, El Candado, The beautiful sandy beaches here are ideal for swimming and sunbathing, and are situated beside the famous Pablo Picasso Promenade, which is lined with cafés and restaurants serving fabulous fresh fish. The most popular beaches in this part of town are La Farola, La Malagueta, La Caleta, Baños del Carmen, Pedregalejo, Las Acacias, El Palo, and El Chanquete.

The Squid Route stretches from the Guadalhorce river bed to the eastern border of Torremolinos, and the long, sandy beaches include San Andrés, Misericordia, Guadalhorce, Guadalmar, and the ever-popular Golf Parador resort.
For swimming, sunbathing, and all types of water sports activities, Malaga´s beaches are unbeatable.

The best beaches of Malaga

The best beaches in Malaga

  • Playa de la Malagueta: A town beach that has been awarded a blue flag, located 10 minutes from the centre in Paseo Pablo Picasso, 1200 metres long, busy, black sand, good facilities, life guards, accessible by bus, restaurants and beach bars.
  • Playa Palo: Located next to El Candado marina (good for sailing, diving and swimming…) many little coves, quite busy, life guards, promenade, good atmosphere, facilities, restaurants, beach bars, car park.
  • Playa Huellín:, A town beach, located in the promenade named after Antonio Banderas, good atmosphere, quite busy, beach bars, life guards, good facilities, accessible by bus.
  • Playa Las Acacias: Very popular beach, so get there early. Grey, fine sand, excellent facilities, 1200m long and 20m wide it is divided into sheltered sandy coves by long rocky breakwaters. Very popular with young people. Lively promenade.

Playas near Malaga. If you are looking for quieter more secluded beaches then hire a car and drive a short distance along the Costa del Sol to the following beaches:

  • Playa Torrox: About 30 miles up the coast, this is a much less-crowded beach. Just 300m long. The only inconvenience is its proximity to the main road.
  • Playa Benajarafe in Velez Malaga: Just a short drive away, some regard this as Malaga’s best beach. Dark, fine sand, over 4km long and 33m wide.
  • Playa Almayate Bajamar in Velez Malaga. Nearly 4km long, this nudist beach gives you an idea of what the coast used to look like before tourism took over. Plans to build a promenade however may mean that it’s time asMalaga’s only unspoilt beach is limited

Malaga City disposes of 16 beaches, amongst others Guadalmar, Huelin, La Malagueta, Pedregalejo and El Palo. The majority of these urban beaches consist of rather dark sand and are heavily frequented in summer, whereas the beaches in the eastern part of the city (Pedregalejo, El Palo, Peñon del Cuervo) are less busy and change in consistence from fine sand to pebbly underground.

Torremolinos, maybe the most famous tourist town along the Costa del Sol, has very pretty beaches, too, for example Los Alamos, Playamar, El Bajondillo or La Carihuela.

Another town with the reputation of having excellent beaches is Fuengirola, with the 10 km long promenade “Paseo Maritimo” dividing the beaches Carvajal, Torreblanca, Los Boliches and Fuengirola.

Last but not least should be mentioned Nerja, a real insider’s tip: Its beaches are small and dreamlike, and most time of the year they are not as heavily frequented as other beaches of the Costa del Sol.
